So I think the dof works well. I can see what I am supposed to be looking at and then my eye is led into the softer petals of the flower. Great colours and composition as well. My one area of uncertainty is the background. I find the shadows a little complex and distracting.
Certainly makes sense Josh. The "shadows" are not shadows at all but a clump of weeds behind the flower. I deliberately emphasised them in PP in order to give the impression that they are, in fact, shadows !
I looked at this and immediately thought of Olivier Baussan and L'Occitane. I love that stuff - I buy loads of it.
I love the colours and also the composition. I like the blueish background, also the shapes of the background as well as the colours. Interesting idea showing the dying/fading flower rather than the fresh one. I can't fault it myself 'cos I love it!
Thanks Pol. L'Occitaine is good stuff, although not as good as they would have you believe ! Like products from most major manufacturers theirs are is full of poisons and carcinogens ! L'Occitaine make a lot of lavender scented products do they not ? One of the ingredients we use a lot in our products is the wild lavender that grows hereabouts. We leave it to dry on the plant just like the chamomile in this picture and then cut the flowers for use in soaps, creams and shampoos. We harvested our lavender crop about 10 days ago. We also grow a lot of rosemary and many other herbs that get used in various products.

I'm warming to the photo now I've seen it on my big screen, but I don't think I 'get' it like Pol. I'm struggling a bit with what it is I'm being asked to critique. I do like the background tones, quite Provencale, and the bokeh is great, it also has a nice grain giving it texture. Apart from this I'm unsure about anything compositionally (is that a proper word) its as though its just a dried flower photographed closely with the b/g blurred out

Ah well ... I canna stand their Lavender products, don't like the fragrance. I've never been keen on lavender.
I go for the Shea Butter and fragrance free creams (their ultra comfort)and the ultra rich shampoo (with shea) and Rameau D'Or products (shampoo, soap and body milks).
I prefer something with a 'clean' yet very subtle fragrance. I don't like ALL they do and if I don't like it I give it away or bin it. So I've honed down my choices .. and I keep them on a my favourits + a wish list.

Good luck to Bear if he does aspire to being another Olivier! I'd be right out there in front filling my basket and my wish list and shoving it in front of anyone and everyone wanting to buy me (or David) a treat.
The tones of bear's image are what do it for me. I absolutley love those colours. I also like the gentle 'sweep and swirl' which so evokes the feel and sound of the flowers growing in their natural environment. The key word being *Natural*.
I can easily see that image on gift wrap or maybe on a suitable product packaging - even though it's a fading flower. That's JW and Olivier Baussan rolled into one that is.
