Which version for you?

Dear All,

Torn between these two versions and would welcome your views along with any general critique. I noticed this scene early one morning before the tourists arrived in San Gimignano. It needed something else though. And then the pigeon arrived.

I much prefer the colored (first) version. There is a brightness that draws my interest there from out of the tunnel. And the pidgeon adds that little bit extra that brings it up a notch. Although I often prefer b/w the montone version has too much "sameness" to it to make me want to keep looking.
But that is just my opinion and I might be the only one who feels this way.

Josh, the top pic almost feels monotone ish anyway because of the dark tunnel and cobbles, and then your eye gets led to the top of the pic where you are rewarded with some lovely colour. I do like the sepia version, but on this occasion I much prefer the colour one.
I like it alot.

I like the top (Colour) version. The colours have a something about them - a subtle quality I can't quite describe.

Hello Josh
As you decided to include a fair portion of the tunnel I feel it is important that we get to see some detail; there is just so much in total shadow. I have always found it very difficult/impossible to get the exposure any where near right in these circumstances. There may well be some detail to be lifted with some selective curves/levels. it might be worth a try.
To be honest I find it difficult to choose which presentation to choose from.
The light on the cobble stones is very nice as is having the birdie present as well.

I definitely prefer the colour one. Pigeon is great and makes the shot - how much did you pay him ?

I offered him chicken feed but in the end he settled for peanuts

Hi Tom, I think the whole point of the image is that you are in a dark tunnel and seeing no detail in the tunnel makes the image, think of it as a frame for the image within, exposing detail in the tunnel would defeat the whole object of the picture, I am of coarse guessing that this is what Josh intended

I have to agree with Ash. The detail in the cobblestones is just enough to draw the eye to the real image at the end of the tunnel. Any more detail would be too much and would be very distracting to the viewer.
