Its ok, I like the idea of the flash exposing the foreground for impact but there is nothing really super about the image as a whole, sorry.

I think the idea of having the gravestone in the foreground is a good technique that's tried and tested. I'm wondering if in this instance it may have been more effective further to the right though. The background id slightly out of focus which gives it that 3D quality whilst still showing enough detail to let the eye look around the landscape with interest.

I wonder if you had waited whether the area to the bottom left would have been lit by the sun more, perhaps you could try lifting it yourself.

I also feel there are conflicting lines in the photo which make it feel not quite level. I can see that the picture is level, but somehow it feels as though it isn't. The background is sloping to the right and the foreground with gravestone sloping to the left, not sure if others sense it, but it somehow feels odd to me

So you think flash was used?

It was a guess, the picture has a brightly lit foreground (within range of flash)
and dark scenery behind. Its not such a way out assumption is it
Now after looking at the data I see flash was not fired.

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for your thoughts, when I looked at this scene I decided to use the stone and the road as a focal point, although what also intrigued me was the conflicting foreground and mid and background lines.
I have to admit that these have been slightly emphasized by a small crop and bringing the skyline into what I felt was a better orientation.
With the bottom left which at the time was under the proverbial Dartmoor cloud, I was going to lighten it but wanted to make the stone more prominent in the foreground as this had natural sunlight on it.

Its not a comp winner by any means but it reaches something I set out to achieve whils sat in such a nice spot

I'm in two minds about the positioning of the gravestone and it's actual scale as it blocks out a lot of the landscape; a bit of a sore thumb really. Being where it is, I think a simple landscape without the stone would be more pleasing.

I agree with Tom here. In fact the gravestone and foreground seem oversharpened to me. Sorry Mike it does absolutely nothing for me, I can't really see where I am supposed to be looking unless it is the gravestone.
