  • Gig photography.......continued

I've posted a series of shots I took at a concert I attended last week, but thought I'd rear my head above the parapet and post one for critique.

I like it, even though it's extremely dark, but would be interested in your comments. I normally shoot in AE mode at concerts but for this one I realised as I composed the shot that I was in manual. The histogram is way off the scale...

    Hi

IMHO it is almost there. It is a little too dark but not far off at all. With a little more light I think it would be a great picture. The composition the expression of the subject all spot on for me.

Can you do anything with exposure when processing?

    best regards

Josh is right, it is a good composition but it is under-exposed. The first thing I would try is simply upping the exposure in Lightroom or Photoshop, if you have either. A small change probably won't geegrade the image much and you won't loose the moody feel of the shot but you should get a little more detail.

        What a great pic.

I agree just an increase in exposure and WOW.

Really like this caz and only brightness and 50% sharpness in photoshop makes it a fantastic picture, anything else would spoil the blacks.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, which was what I was after. I really like this image, but knew it lacked it certain "something".

I've been back to Canon DPP and the RAW image, and increased the exposure by 0.83 - sorry Ash, I hadn't seen your version when I was off editing! I haven't sharpened it though as it was set on level 3 in camera. After seeing your version I did go back to DPP and upped the sharpness, but at 100% view it really started to get noisy!

And I haven't cropped this version - increasing the exposure has brought out the stage lighting, so what do you think now?

Terrific picture, I love this sort of image. I prefer the original crop though, in fact I didn't dislike the darker quality of the first offering.

Sorry Ash your treatment goes too far and spoils the picture IMO.

I like this cersion Caz, works really well, increasing the exposure has brought out just enough detail without spoiling the atmosphere. The crop I am not so sure about. It does give more of the stage lights but the empty space is behind the subject. I like the idea but can't make my mind up which crop I prefer. Very minor niggle about what is a great picture.

I'd very much agree with Patrick and Bear, you have undoubtedly improved the shot by increasing the exposure, though for me I would sacrifice the area to the left. The picture is about the singer and the lighting on her, not about the lighting itself, pretty as the blue light rays might be.

Caz if you remove the blue lights you will lose some of the atmosphere of the shot, I admit I might have oversharpened my offering but it definately needed some sort of exposure enhancement.

Your second edit is a fantastic effort Caz. I agree with the others who prefer the squarer format and there is still a nice amount of the blue lighting there anyway.
Sorry Ash; I think your edit has done a little more harm than good especially on the face and hands which were always going to be the most vulnerable areas with any exposure increase.

Thank you so much for all your comments and suggestions. Here's version 3, with the original 8 x 10 crop (and I think I'll leave it there)
