  • Another car

Having seen Blank Page's image, Retired, made me think of a shot I took earlier in the year whilst visiting a friend's farm and came across a car that she'd bought some years ago with the intention of doing up.

It's not of great quality - taken with my Sony phone as I didn't have my camera with me at the time (just took it to show to the friend who takes me to steam ralllies!). I don't that I edited it much when I uploaded it, apart from possibly lightening it a little and cropping some of the hedge.

    I'd appreciate your comments.

Lovely subject, Carol, but the car is off-set to the left which leaves the picture unbalanced. I'd place more space in front of the car than behind it.

With some re-positioning, this would look very good as a moody monochrome. Is the car accessible again? You could try taking some shots from different angle close up to create some wide angle perspective distortion, or try a lower shooting position - lost of potential for experimentation.

Best turn off the date stamp too (or was this a film shot that was printed?).

      Hi Carol,

I totally agree with everything Ian has said.....as a rule of thumb, anything you take a picture of, leave more negative space on the side to which it would naturally move. For example if you were taking a picture of an animal, leave more space on the side on which it is looking.

I dont recal what package you use to post process, but a conversion to mono, or even sepia would suit this nicely!

        Hi Carol,
An image with a lot of potential in mono, or perhaps edited to resemble an image taken on early grainy color film. agree with all that has already been said.

I just noticed you said this was taken with your Sony phone (it still sounds odd to say that! ) Which model do you have? I'm currently trying the 3 megapixel K800i - which carries the Sony Cybershot digital camera branding.

Now that's a doer upper. It could keep your friend occupied for a long time.

There's a lot happening on that car, four colours of paint that I can see, different shades of rust, etc. It could keep a photographer occupied for a long time too.

              And I couldn't help but notice--nice angle.

                Re: Another car

Haven't had time to look at the forum today, so was really pleasantly surprised by the number of replies and suggestions. Must go back and have another go with my proper camera this time - as I said, it was a quick snap with a camera phone, so wasn't expecting too much of it.

Ian - it was taken with a Sony K750i, a 2MP phone, which works well as long as you set it to maximum resolution. Have used it once or twice in an emergency - took some quite reasonable ones at my sister's wedding when my Fuji packed up, and the macro and 'night' mode were better than the Fuji A340 anyway! There's a picture of a tree frog in my gallery which was taken with the phone. Do you have the flash attachment?

Not sure when I'll be over in East Anglia again, but know the car will still be there. Believe she was thinking of trying to get one of those TV makeover shows to do it up for her, as it would be worth quite a lot of money. It does still have an engine, it's just not in the car at present.

It's not worth it with the image I've got, but will go back with my other camera and have a play some time - have made a note of the suggestions!
