    Just realised that I should have perhaps, cropped the surfer on the left to make the photo a bit more balanced.

      I think I can see what attracted you to this scene in the first place Brian. There are several elements such as the horizontal lines created by the waves, water and beach, then there are slightly comic backs of the onlookers, not to mention their reflections in the wet beach. There is some drama also in the breaking wave and the spray blowing in the wind. All the elements are there.

      IMHO what it lacks is the correct camera position. You look as though you were on top of a dune or cliff and were looking down on the scene. To get some great photos the photographer has to move to the definitive position My feeling is that a much lower and nearer position would have helped. Get to a position where all the elements gel together, then crop in the viewfinder
