[Autumn]

We had to submit 3 panels of four images for a competition in our Photographic Society. It is the first time we have ever had a competition like this and I was struggling to know the best way to do it.

Here they are:

I would really welcome your comments, hints and advice on compiling such panels. I should have said that there needed to be some type of link within each panel.

I downloaded some software to automatically arrange the pics but didn't really get the hang of it and it was cutting off vital pieces of my pcs.

Some of the images had already been adjusted and I had named them, as in the Cathedral Panel. If I had had more time, I would have put the same font on them all and the same colour - in other words been consistent, but I also had to prepare 3 panels for my husband.

Looking forward to how I can make a more professional job next time. Thanks.

All of the collages are themed well and the layouts are all different.
The first one is not very well balanced. The sizes are almost the same which in itself makes it look unbalanced.
The 2nd would be my choice. The portrait size fits nicely and the other 3 balance the frame. Nice touch having the centre one offset.
The 3rd I find a bit boring. I don't care much for the frame on this one and the individual photo framing looks a bit to thick given the small photo size.
The 4th, seasonal shots, would I feel look better if they were identical in size and with the same border. They are easy to recognise as what they are and in this case I feel that 'uniform presentation' would be better suited.

There are lots of programmes with preset layouts for collages. All you need to do is drag and drop your images into your preselected layout. 'Snapfire' is one such programme. Others come bundled with some camera software and I'm sure that more will be mentioned.

I like the presentation of the images, they all look ballanced to me eccept the Fourth one, in this one the images need to be either the same size or a more ballanced mixture of different sizes the very small difference in size spoils the presentation. The frames really need to be smaller/thinner and simple, in my opinion, Why not have a look at some of the port folio's on the web to see how others have presented their photographs, both proffessionals and amateurs.
However overall I like the presentation, better than I could do I expect, as I have never had to do it "Yet".

Thanks Pops for all your comments. I wasn't totally satisfied with them (my pics) but it was the best I could do with the images I had, as I had to crop them to get the image I wanted.

I remembered when I saw your comments that I do have a program which either came with one of my cameras or my printer.

I will try harder next time.

I did a search before I started to see how others had presented panels, but I just could not find anything only a couple of tryptechs.

I know what I like when presenting a single photo and also what I don't like, but with a panel, I haven't seen enough to know the best presentation so I need to see someone else who has done them.

If anyone knows of a website where people have presented a panel of photographs, would you please send me a link - only if it is any good, you understand.

BTW Tinka, I see you use a Fuji S9500. I have one and I like the fact that there is a built in 300 mm lens. I believe you are moving to a DSLR - hasn't the Fuji performed well enough for you?

With any of the programmes you won't have to bother resizing, it is done inprogramme for you.
Pain Shop Prox also has a few ready made templates within the print layout

Hi Autumn,

The presentations are OK, though they could be better (in terms of presentation) with less hassle. Download and try Lumapix Photofusion. Version 2.1.9207 is older and simpler and very easy to use.

Panel 1st and 3rd are the most interesting for me.
Also the photo taken behind the curtain should be on your gallery, if not yet

I believe you gave us a link during the summer when you showed your Greece pictures as a Montage. I was so impressed I downloaded it then but unfortunately couldn't really get to grips with it.

ATM I have version 3.7.

Now the "Panels" are done for another year, I will spend some time in the new year to try a family collage. We have four children with partners/spouses and 7 grandchildren. The difficult part will be deciding which to include.

Also the photo taken behind the curtain should be on your gallery, if not yet

Yes the Fuji 9500 is a great camera, and I too love the 28 to 300mm zoom range, and the performance for a bridge camera is also extremely good, I will keep the Fuji but would love to move to a DSLR at some point, because I have been used to an SLR as well as compacts in the 35 mm film world. I also like the thought of the top quality glass that is available for a DSLR, But I wont be moving just yet, I have to be able to justify the cost etc: with my limited ability and knowledge of digi anything at present I just can't justify that sort of expenditure . "Mind you if the big one come up in the lottery"
