I had an email from my daughter, who is mountain trekking in Nepal, saying that the uv lens protection filter that she always keeps on her camera has cracked. She is certain that it made no contact with anything solid or sharp. Could it have anything to do with low temteratures?

Not being an expert on filter material, the answer may depend on the quality of the filter, I have used a filter on my 35mm lenses for a long time WINTER AND SUMMER , never had one crack on me, could be that it has been knocked in the past and weakened then become vulnerable to low temperatures or temperature changes. Which reminds me, must get one for my digi lens.Catch Ya Later

Re: Cracked Filter
I have filters on my lenses that have taken some adverse conditions without a problem. I'm just wondering if the glass could be prone to problems in temps down to -5. Temperatures the my filters have never experienced.
It could well be all down to quality.

Originally posted by Blank Page View PostLiving in Saskatchewan, the filters on my old 35 mm film camera (UV, polarizing, colour correction, etc.) all went through many sessions at -20 C and colder and never suffered for it. I would say something else caused the filter to crack, but I don't have any suggestions.
Thank you Blank Page; I think you have satisfied my curiosity.
