  • Corrupt 8gb Compact Flash Card

    Hi Guy

I've got a card that has failed.

At the end of the day I've only lost a two hour session but does anyone know of a free software package to recover the files that are on the card.

I use the word "free" for obvious reasons.

    Cheers

There are loads of free file recovery progs, just google for them. However if you 'puter won't see the card you are going to struggle. If you bought a good quality card like a Sandisk Extreme III they come with a free recovery disc, which I can vouch for

Just one thought. You say your card has failed, but you don't say how.

It is a very large card and if you are downloading through camera software, sometimes the old software isn't capable of taking the larger memory cards.

Eg. I always used Canon Zoombrowser for downloading, but when I got a 2 Gb it would not recognise it. My husband then bought one of these tiny Canons with the latest Zoombrowser and I can download 2 Gb cards through this.

Of course, your card might just be showing ERROR

A two hour session can still be a lot of images.
My view would be to have 4 x 2 gig cards a much saver option, with my 40D I can get over a 100 RAW images on a 2 gig, its still a lot of pictures if it gets corrupted or lost but you would still have 6 gig to go and the images files they contain.

I'm with Patrick on this, I have a collection of 1 & 2GB cards and, although it may not be as convenient as using one high capacity card, it certainly 'feels' safer.

Hope you get your files back, as Stephen said there's a few progs out there that are free / available for peanuts.

Go here for a free programme. I use it and highly recommend it.

                Hi There

Thanks for all your points - taken on board.

                1. Cheers to Autumn for the little program.
                2. Corrupt card - just one of those things i guess regardless of size.
                3. I have a selection of other cards which i rotate through my camera. On the day in question I completed the usual practice of ensuring that any previous data was downloaded to pc and a format of the card.
                4. I have ordered and received a new Sandisk 4gb card which now comes with free recovery software.

                Cheers Dave R
