This shot is an example of what has happened to a few times where it doesn't look quite natural, as if it's a painting or computer generated image. It's unintended and I have no control over it. Is this a flaw with the in-camera processing of a cheaper consumer camera? (Kodak CX7525)

Re: Photograph looks like it's computer generated
This looks like a nice picture but it's hard to judge it 100% as it's reduced in size. Are you saying that there is no fine detail - even at full size?Originally posted by Blank Page View PostThis shot is an example of what has happened to a few times where it doesn't look quite natural, as if it's a painting or computer generated image. Re: Photograph looks like it's computer generated
Ian I could be jumping the gun here but I think he is referring to the noise in the image. Exif data dose not show any reference to ISO so may be that the camera has auto selected a high ISO setting. Looks grainy to me.Originally posted by Ian View PostThis looks like a nice picture but it's hard to judge it 100% as it's reduced in size. Re: Photograph looks like it's computer generated
Doesn't look noisy to me, Ron, though my CRT monitor is more forgiving of noise than an LCD.
I'll check on an LCD screen again in a minute.
But I agree with Stephen, the image seems to have been edge-sharpened, almost with scissors. I think this can only be a by-product of the re-sizing. What we really need to see is the original camera file.
By all means email it to me using the mailto:[email protected] address and I'll have a look, Blank Page

Re: Photograph looks like it's computer generated
Sorry for the confusion, I should have given more info (still learning the ropes). The image hasn't been sharpened, just resized and the brightness and contrast boosted (looking at it again, it could probably be given even more constrast). The original was darker than it should have been, as most shots are with this camera.
It was probably shot using the Auto setting as Lumix suggested (it's just too damn easy, though I'm starting to work with the manual options more). It was shot hand held at the highest resolution -- 2560 x 1920 -- and there's no sharpening option in the camera menu. (I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit I don't know what anti-aliasing is.)
To me, it doesn't seem quite natural looking. The tones seem to ring false somehow, too pastel looking, particularly on the raft and the two vertical boards. I thought maybe under certain circumstances the processing in the camera isn't up to snuff. Or maybe it's something else.
I'll email a copy of the original, Ian, thanks for the offer. And thanks to everyone for the comments. I can see I came to the right place.

Re: Photograph looks like it's computer generated
I've had a look at the original and reproduced my version below. I think part of the problem is that the original file I was sent is very small for a five megapixel image - just under 500K. This suggests to me that the cameras was set to a lower quality recording mode than is desirable.
Kodak use a star system - 1-3 stars and a 5 megapixel Kodak DX6440 I have used in the past produced 1.3MB JPEG images on average at the 3* setting. (Pardon me - just checked my facts and the DX6440 is only 4MP, which just further underlines my hunch that the 5MP CX7525 used here was set to a low quality, high compression, image quality mode).
But aside from that, I really like the composition

Re: Photograph looks like it's computer generated
Hi Ian, finally
. I noticed the file size when I sent it to you but thought it was because there were large areas of similar colour, but maybe not. I don't recall ever setting the resolution to less than maximum, but this is the image I burned to disc. I think I have mixed up a few times
. Thanks for taking the time, though.
The new smilies are cool, too.
