I'm trying to get into macro photography, I've bought the lens, the focusing rail, extension tube and the 500d but now need to buy a flash. Is it better to go for the dedicated ring flash, ie MR14 Ex or is it better to go for something like the 580ex with an off camera shoe cord. Any help or advice would be great.

Thank's in advance

I think a 580EX is going to be invaluable for general photography but a ring flash is going to be a much more appropriate light source for a lot of macro work.
If you can't stretch to the cost of a Canon one, Sigma does a very good lower cost one.

I suspect Ian gives good advice on this matter Easty. For my own part I have no experience of using a ring flash setup. My only observation would be that if you can only afford one flash setup, the ringflash would be more restricting and less versatile. The 580EX is a brilliant flashgun though. I even have an older 550Ex and can use them together using the built in wireless slave
At the moment Stephen all I'm doing is working to fund my addiction ! I really must get out more !

(Stephen can I just ask you one more question , 400, 20 or 30D) ?? lol
OMG what a question
Personally I might be inclined to go for the 30D, its spec and build quality is undoubtedly superior in many ways. Howevr if you want pixels and a few more whistles and bells then the 400D is the one. I had a 20D for a good time and loved it, the way of working with it is better and the 30D carries this principle forward but with a bigger screen and a few more extras. Megapixels are not everything and 8ish is fine for me. I went for the 1DMk2N based on this principle against the FF 5D

Don't worry about it - it's Winter anyway. I was looking through a pile of Photo CDs yesterday, looking for something for one of our sons, and I came across a picture of you you'd once posted over at the other place - all handsome and smart in yer baseball cap and a t-shirt..... cor!! I had none of yer snowmobile though.
Anyway - what I really wanted to say is that you might also find 'SpeedGraphic' a useful source for buying kit. They do a catalogue too, for mail order, but their online prices are often lower than the prices stated in their catalogue. Also, they often have stuff that's not easy to find elsewhere. Their website is HERE
No Pol, all it is is a focusing rail. "The most essential accessory for focusing in the field of macro photography" Two fine-friction drives allow precise positioning of the camera system in relation to the object you are photographing with a max adjustment of 13.5cm

Tony you will use it more that you think. They are by far the best way to focus in macro mode. Wish I had one now. Sold mine years ago along with other stuff I thought I'd never use again.
