    Hello Again,
Last night I tried to take indoor shots without flash (because I was shooting through an interior window) I put the ISO speed to 800 and 1600 and just couldn't get a clear shot. I know I am missing something...help!

    Thank you!!

I reckon uploading the result may help understand the conditions you were trying to shoot.

When you say a clear shot, how do you mean, how did the shot turn out?

Uping the ISO will always give a grainy, or 'noisy' result. Depending on what you shoot, if the shot requires flash, and you choose not to use it, inevitably you need to increase the exposure time, meaning you need a tripod, and as a preference remote release, if you dont have either of these, you could always put the camera on a steady surface, and use the built in timer on the camera.

      Hello!
Grainy is the exact way to describe my shot! What you say makes perfect sense. I like the way shots look "warm" when a flash is not used. Sometimes they look a little stark with it...is there a way to achieve this warm look with a flash when one is on the fly and a tripod is either not possible or not convenient?
      Thanks for your time!!

Try to use slow sync (if available), also check whether there is a night mode in setup/menu, combine this with slow sync and slow shutter speed will allow you to capture more ambient light after flash.

I agree. I was the same, didn't post any pictures for ages then wondered why I'd been so reticent when I did eventually pluck up enough courage to post my first image.

Your work is as valid and valued as anyone else's, Dana. Everyone is merely on a different part of a never-ending learning curve. Just got for it and enjoy yourself.

I can't imagine anyone here saying anything nasty about anyone's photos.
The only difference between 'you' and 'them' is they've been doing it longer and already made the same mistakes!

As has been said, people will be able to give you much better advice if they can see the shot. It does sound like it's noisey because of the high ISO setting, but sometimes if things are underexposed they can look noiser still.

The 'warm' look you mention could be because of white balance or colour temperature. Tungsten lighting such as you usually have inside the home will appear more orange than daylight or flash which has the same colour temperature.

                        Re: Clear Shots Without Flash

Some of the best photos that I have seen are usually from people without any technical knowledge, and they just capture the moment, be it expression, feel or mood. At one point (in my old lab business), I have 10 framed prints on the wall, one day I realised after that 9 out of the 10 prints (all but one are from pro photographers) were either blur or out of focus. That said a lot about photography - for me- at the time, as I choose the images to put on that wall, that I was not looking for technical ability, but the feel of it.

IMO, we should try to think out side of the box when we can, go out and photograph whatever is to your fancy, this a good way to developed our senses and learn to loose our minds in order to express ourself fully, too many of us is bound by the technical issues, rules and 'opinions' (may they be constructive or destructive).

Life is a journey, enjoy the moment and share, like all of us here at DPNow.

A big hug and kisses to all, as I really enjoy being here, without you guys and girls, this will not happen.

                          Hi,
What a wonderful approach to a hobby/proffesion, you are the first Pro I have heard who has expressed these sentiments, could not agree more.

I sent one of my images into photo critique expecting the worst, but everybody was so helpful with good advice that I will post again when I have been able to get out to take some more pictures!

So post your pictures, it does you good and you will feel as though you have acheived something.

                              Hello All,
Thank you everyone for the encouragement! Very nice comments that I appreciate and have taken to heart. I did manage to fix my problem this time by using all of the good advice.....the person who was the subject of my picture didn't want their mug posted, so I will post something tomorrow that doesn't have a person in it! If weather permits I will be going to a local waterfall and plan on taking a lot of shots....we'll see what happends

                              Thanks to all again
