This question is mainly for Ian as he writes for a magazine. I would like to know what course he would recommend for a beginner; the OU course that his good lady is doing or one of the courses run by What Digital Camera/Armature Photographer.

Sorry for for not seeing this, Brian. Feel free to PM me if this happens again
The OU short course is very good, but I think you are well above that profieciency, or are you thinking of a course for someone else. If so, the OU course is very good for competent and enthusiastic beginners; plus you get a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 included in the cost.
I'll be honest and say that I don't really know much about WDC and AP courses - but I will certainly try to find out.
I noticed that all though it says WDC/AP it is run by The School of Photographic Imaging and the address is:
The School of Photographic Imaging Administrator
IPC Media Ltd
Blue Fin Building
110 Southwark Street
London

I have been informed that if they register with ILA ScotlandLearn Direct Scotland under the funding links. I believe they also have to register their courses with Learn Direct Scotland and Learn Direct who cover England, Wales and Northern Ireland and I would presume that there will be links for help with funding on the Learn Direct site too.
The OU course is listed with Learn Direct Scotland and the OU is registered with ILA Scotland, I have not checked but would think that it will also be listed with Learn Direct.
