  • Slide scanning

I'm looking for recommendations on a good slide scanner. In the past I've seen some that ran from about $400.00 USD up to $1800.00. How much is enough?
I like to make prints up to 11x14. I realize you can't expect much from poor slides but I have some from a Canon A-1 that look pretty good.

I would encourage you to go for a dedicated tranny scanner rather than use a flat bed type for the best quality and speed. The best affordable units come from Canon, Nikon and Konica Minolta (not sure KM are still making them, though). I'd also recommend a unit with a hardware-based dust removal system, like Digital ICE or Canon's FARE system.

I've heard of people buying a scanner to digitise their stock of film negs and slides and then ebaying the scanner after they were done, so you might consider a second hand one.
