i have the nikon d40 for which i am thinking of buying the sigma 105 macro
that lens will not auto focus on the d40, what i wish to know is, would i be losing out a great deal , as i believe mostly people manually focus using macro,
your advice would be appreciated,,, john

Sigma already makes motorised versions of this lens for Canon EF and Olympus Four Thirds mounts, so I would think it's only a matter of time before a Nikon version with an AF motor is produced. It's your call, but I personally wouldn't be happy without AF. In a way, to be quite truthful, if you really want a flexible selection of lenses, you have the wrong camera body. Nikon and the third party lens industry will take a couple of years to adpat the D40 strategy of in-lens AF motor reliance.

        Or trade the D40 in for a D80, or a D70 - even a D50?
