  • I need your help!!

    Hello All !
I recently took this picture but being a beginner in photoshop I cannot lighten the backround and darken his face at the sametime . I do realize that the light on his face is too harsh . Can anyone help?

Which Photoshop are you using Jennifer? If it is CS or CS2 the >Image>Adjustments>Shadow/Highlights should be a good start, but there are other methods using selections which also work.

      Hi Jennifer,

There are several methods of doing this, aside from Rogers method (which is by far the easiest!) you could use layers. create one layer to darken, another to lighten, then combine the too (would take too long to explain, but try looking up some tutorials)

Another would be to use the 'burn' tool on his cheek.

If you are a newbie to Photoshop, might I suggest taking a look at some f the Digital Photography magazines, a lot of them has 'video tutorials' on them.

I certainly found these very useful!

If I have time tonight, I will have aplay with your picture (with your permission) and if the results are any good, I will post the methods used.

          Hi Jennifer,
I don't usually play with other peoples photo's but thought I would try with yours, the following is the best that I can achieve with my limited experience.
These are the result of useing adjustment layers in PS and adjusting color ballance, curves and levels and a few other tweeks. Just experimentation really.

                Hi Jennifer,
I couldn't resist the challenge! It wasn't easy, the two main problems being that the focus was on the left shoulder, which meant that the facial features are blurred a bit, and the strong yellow tint on the right cheek. I suppose that it was a flash picture but with a strong tungsten light off to the right.
I avoided using layers or channels, because that can become quite complicated, so this is what I tried:

Selection around the right cheek, reduce the exposure, and remove the yellow stain using selective colour. Finish off the yellow stain around the eye with the clone tool.
Lighten the iris colours a little using the dodge tool, and make the catchlight a bit larger.
Selective sharpen the eyes to increase their impact, then sharpen the whole picture.

Still not perfect, but getting better. It just goes to show that the most important step is the taking of the picture. I hope you don't mind my comments.

                Roger
