Had a charger and 4 batteries (AA) charged batteries up for about 12 hours and put two in camera (finepix A600 zoom) within a day they were flat (yes camera was turned off) so i put second set in that were charged at same time but had been left on the side, and when i put them in they showed flat straight off.

Chuck em Keith. If they are not holding their charge, I'd guess they have had it. Get some NiMh, the highest output you can find
Sounds like they are Nicd this type of battery has a memory effect, where when you discharge them and recharge the capacity gets less and less, like Stephen says get some NiMh with a high capacity, I use them quite a bit they have no memory effect and last longer once charged, just make sure the charger you have will charge them, of not you can buy a charger with 4 batteries quite cheap.

Edit, just saw your reply, either try them in something else, a friends camera or take them back and get them changed.
Does your camera need a menu setting to let it know it is using rechargeables? Rechargeables are only 1.2V compared to normal AAs at 1.5V. Some cameras need to know which type of battery is being used.
Exactly! That is why they don't last long.
For a battery to reach its maximum charging and power capacity, it does that after a few 3-4 initial charges.
In Lithiums this effect is more intense.
For example, in my FZ5 the first time I charged the battery after I bought the camera, it lasted for 200 shots. After the first 3-5 charges it reached 350 shots per charge.
If the batteries you have bought are defective then they will never be able to last even after the first few charges.
well they are on charge again now, so i will have to see, just wondered what the norm was as all this digital thingy is new.
but i have mastered how to download to my pics then transfer the best to a disc. then i took that into the photo shop and got them developed as i cant cope as yet without my 6 x 4 print to stick in my album. this is going to get a lot of weaning off.
The manual specifically says don't use NiCads - are you sure yours are NiMH (which is good) rather than NiCad or NiCd types?

To add on Ian's post and just in case you own a charger of this specific type:
Some chargers have a selection button "2-4"
When set to "2" the charger will only charge the 2 left batteries on the charger while ignoring the 2 right batteries if present.
When set to 4 the charger will charge all batteries present in the charger.
This option is there in case someone wants to charge only 2 batteries and not 4 at all times.

RTFM, I feel
Ian
thank you for that, I have been having similar problems,
doh should read instruction manual, changed to rechargables
so hopefully things will last a bit longer
