Mist and fog

We spent a few days in the Lake District over the school holidays, and one day was foggy in the morning, giving the lake a very eerie look. I took about 15 shots which looked ok on the preview screen, but when I got home and looked, they all looked massively over-exposed.

How do you get decent photos of mist/fog, and how do you rescue the ones you have taken? (jpg only images )

OK, I can think of a few things I would do in Lightroom - increase the black level, contrast and experiment with Clarity. I think a mono conversion would work well too.

Which software do you use for image processing?

I only have access to Elements 7.

Do you have a RAW file version of the image or just JPEG?

I hope you don't mind me altering your image.
As Ian told - add a bit underexposure; increase shadows, darks and clarity; decrease a lights and saturation. Maybe added a bit too much clarity and darks but I just did it really fast. It would probably do even better with area specific modifications plus some time and extra effort.

No unfortunately not. I'm just starting to get back into photography again and havent done any RAW files yet.

Thought that all the fog above the trees looked just like burnt out sky - without any misty features to tell us it was fog.
Yes it does look a bit too dark for a foggy day for me so lightened it and cropped the top off.

Just my take on it if you don't mind.

Shoot in RAW and you could do even more, remember JPG throws a great deal of information away that cannot be retrieved.

Both Keith & Throt have done very well to get out of the picture what they have, particularly as its a reduced version for posting.
