  • Lens Adapter

    Good evening.

Does anyone know if there is an adapter to go from a Cannon lens mount (SLR)to a Sony mount (DSLR)?

    Thank you.

    Re: Lens Adapter

Hi Rich, I'm not an expert of lens adapters but have some interests on it.
I assume that you want to use Canon FD (or FL) mount lenses on Sony(KonicaMinolta) A-mount body. My search result shows no such adapter so I looked into the flange back of some mounts.

Canon FD mount: flange back 42mm (Spigot type mount, though similar to bayonet in case of new FD mount). All others listed below are pure bayonet type mount.

    Minolta A-mount: flange back 44.5mm

    just for comparisons:
Canon EF mount: flange back 44mm
Nikon F mount: flange back 46.5mm
Olympus OM mount: flange back 46mm

So you see, the flange back of FD lens is shorter than that of A-mount. This means, if I understand properly, a simple adapter (by that I mean an adapter without any conversion lens) cannot be made if you want to use the infinity distance. To put it differently, the flange back of the body (like Canon EF mount: 44mm) must be shorter than the flange back of lenses (like Nikon F mount 46.5mm, or OM mount 46mm). In these cases, theoretically it's possible to manufacture a simple adapter. I use OM(lens)-EF(body) adapter for OM 75-150mm and F(lens)-EF(body) adapter for Nikkor 105mm macro and keep them in a camera bag.

An adapter with conversion lens (such as FD mount lens for EF mount, supplied by Canon in earlier days), you cannot use it for all lenses (i.e. that's only for limited lenses) and/or cannot use the infinity. The image quality also deteriorates due to the conversion lens. Hope this helps a bit.

      Re: Lens Adapter

www.cameraquest.com is usually THE place to find lens mount adapters, but I couldn't fine what you were looking for there. I think Yoshi is right about the flange/back dimension problem. I think your only hope is some kind of custom made solution. Camaraquest might be able to help you if you contact them.
