So is everybody now aware that comments can be posted in the galleries. What do you think, do you like it, will it encourage you to post more photos, will you feel inclined to give ratings and leave comments on others work. Will it mean you will post fewer photos on the forums.

The more ratings that are awarded, and the more views a photo gets, the easier it is to choose potential POTD's By using the Sort facility you can easily see the leading images. Please don't forget to let us know if you think you have found a good candidate by emailing the url to [email protected]

One thing I have learnt is that my own opinion or rating is very similar to others. As all the ratings were made originally with out knowing what others had rated them at, it has been interesting to compare notes. Yes I think this will encourage others to leave comments. May even get a few more involved in critique.

So at long last you have come round to accepting the proposal that I suggested very early on. !! What took you so long. ?

Dennis it was your vision and downright common sense that prevailed in the end, and we realised the error we had made.

Will it now encourage you to comment more?

HaHa Stephen, I knew that would provoke a response, but I don't think that it deserved a punch on the nose.

True enough but ....... go on, admit it.

A notice just came through on the email from Ian explaining that if we want to nominate a picture for POTD we have to do an email. Could I suggest that you simplify this and put a tick box next to the rating tick boxes that we could just click - I do find navigating around the galleries somewhat complex and being in work at the moment don't have that much time to do as much copying and pasting of images into emails as I would like
              Cheers

I wholeheartedly agree with Sue as I wanted to nominate a photo the other day & it was so complex, I gave up & moved on!

Mike and I were discussing only the other day that some parts of the forum are not user friendly at least to us less technical minded users.

Simplify and simplify again and cut navigation to an absolute minimum, that would certainly encourage more users.
For example I wanted to put a comment to Mikes POTD still can't work it out Ian did advise me I was no wiser. Cant there be a button that says comment under the featured picture, job done.

Patrick - you click on the picture in the POTD. This takes you to the page in the gallery where that picture lives. The comments box is open and waiting for your input at the bottom of the that page - I really couldn'ty be that much simpler

I accept that this needs a re-think. On our other site we have gone for the gallery image ratings option. Pictures that are rated above a certain threshold level will eligible for (over there) picture of the week.

I think we should move to this system for now, though I'll always welcome personal emails with comments on particular pictures.

                        Hi Ian
Put like that it certainly is, but its always simple when you know the route.
It would still be simpler if there was a comment button with the image.

The fact others are saying they fine some things complicated and given up, does indicate its not just me, or Mike for that matter.

Mike gave up on entering the salon he just couldn't work out how to do it, my question is how alone is he, for everyone that works it out how many give up and are frightened to look foolish and not ask.

I take your point seriously, Patrick. I will look at how we can implement a comment button on the POTDs or make it easier for people to get to grips with the system.

The Salon's complication is, I feel, down to the fact that we make it a rule that you have to feature a picture in your DPNow gallery. This is to encourage more people to register and start using the gallery. On the one hand, the Salon has been a success and the number of entries has been encouraging. But of course we could make it easier and I will have a serious look at how we can do that.

Maybe a HELP link on the Salon will be a good start - connecting the user to a short tutorial (maybe a video tutorial) on what to do.

                            Thats good news Ian

I have often thought not just DP-Now but with computers in general people that write programs and those heavily involved tend to view "easy" different to the general mass. They live with it and see it all as easy.

I have little trouble with Photoshop, but thats not because Photoshop is particularly friendly its not, but I am deeply interested in making it work for me, I therefore work at it. The result is that I feel Photoshop is reasonably easy to use. There are many casual users it frightens to death.
The DP now site is an entertaining distraction, but not something that drives me in the same way Photoshop does, so I don't feel like giving the time to dig deep in how to do things in quite the same way as you and possibly Stephen do.
This must be the attitude I suspect that most visitors to the site take, and therefore I feel should be catered for.

As you know I have contributed to DP-Now for something close to 5 years off and on, and have a sort of affection for it, so I offer my opinions I hope in a positive way and want to see its success grow.

Oh yes - I know you mean well, Patrick

I always encourage constructive criticism. But sometimes folks are not aware of the limits we are up against. DPNow is constructed from highly customised off-the-shelf applications, and I'm sometims amazed at what we can do, but sometimes something that seems very simple can be very hard for use to implement.
