That's a nice one Tom. I have one in bloom at the moment. My experience is the best buy is the two stemmed orchids, they are very expensive though.

I must have done something wrong as the flowers stayed for along time but then dropped off and nothing after that.

Yes Tom That's normal, they continue to bloom for a very long time depending where you put them. I put mine in the conservatory not in full sunlight.
They will bloom again but you have to be very patient always water from the bottom. I put the whole pot in about 4inches of water for two to three hours every couple of weeks. The see through plastic pots I use so that the light is exposed to the roots. I hope this helps. Regards John.
