I am using the canon 70-300 IS USM on the canon 400D
I really could do with a bit more reach but, after laying out for the above, the budget is a bit tight.

Re: Opinions Please
As Stephen has pointed out the two stops loss needs thinking about. From passed experience this makes the lens usable only in very good light. Knock your shutter speed down and you increase the chances of camera shake even with IS. OK so you could use 1/1000 sec. @ f8 by upping the ISO but that's not the best rout. With the 1.4 converter you still get a 600mm lens which with a little cropping of the image will give you the same end result. If I were you I'd go for the 1.4. Having just read Stephens last post, perhaps not.

Re: Opinions Please
Thankyou both for your imput.Originally posted by Stephen View PostOn further research it definately would not focus with your lens due to the max aperture. Its also doubtful whether the 1.4 would either as the max aperture is f5.6 at 300mm and this would become f8
It was in fact the 1.4 I had been looking at and posted the wrong link.
If I have understood this right you are saying that my af would shut down and I would be left with mf only. If that is the case I can see all sorts of problems with my particular subjects. i.e. operating the tripod head with one hand and the focus ring with the other hand
!! any suggestions as to how I operate the shutter release
Back to the drawing board I guess.-------------------------

Re: Opinions Please
I think the problem is that at f8 the screen becomes somewhat dark and the autofocus sensors struggle to lock onto anything.Originally posted by Pops View PostThankyou both for your imput.

Re: Opinions Please
That's right. The Canon converters have an unusual design in that the optics protrude beyond the plane of the lens mount and so fit in side the rear end of the lens being connected. Only some lens models can accommodate this intrusion. It's a physical limitation, rather than anything else.Originally posted by Bearface View PostSorry to spoil the party still further, but I'm almost certain that the 1.4x won't work with that particular lens
Third party converters will have to suffice.
