I've just updated my DPNow blog and the topic is digital camera exposure. There is a simple experiment, or challenge, in the update. I've posted two pictures. One was under exposed and the other was over exposed. Can you tell which was which? And is the old advice of under exposing for safety now really out of date?
Ignoring the frame numbers and that most 5 shot auto bracket runs from under to over (unless this is a clever double bluff)
I've put these side by side in a comparitor and for me Image 1 looks better in that it appeares more natural. Image 2 looks more processed, mainly in the clouds. There are interesting variations in the hystograms with a flatter graph for the lighter Image 1
As for the age old question I still tend to go for under exposure and recover detail from shadows than have the detail burnt out of the whites.
This has emphasized to me the real advantage of bracketing as something I should do more of to better understand exposure and how my camera reacts in different lighting conditions.
