  • DOF increased by blending

I have been experimenting with the technique of blending layers to increase DOF in CS4. Using a very old micro-Nikkor f2.8, non-automatic, results are quite good but labour intensive. The actual blending by CS4 is heavy on RAM, doing 5 layer blends takes up to 2.8GB of DDR2.
I have posted three shots from a series of 5, the actual distance from the furthest focus point to the nearest was 7 cms, and the aperture used was f11.

This is a very good example of "Stacked Focus" that has been very well thought out. Maintaining registration of the subject is difficult but this again has been done well.

Did you alter the focus on the lens or adjust the camera with a focus rail or something

Either way it shows a great technique.

            Hi Graham,

I just adjusted the focus of the lens, I don't own a rail. Glad you liked it.

Re: DOF increased by blending - "Stacked Focus"

As it's the 1st of April

I could not resist a leap back to my childhood and Dr. Seuss

              Three layers of focus produces:
