I think you were far too modest about your pix in that thread, Pol!
Ian
Kind of you to say so, thank you.
I always felt a bit of a fraud with that series actually. I'd spent ages trying various techniques but could never get good, clean and clear smoke. If the smoke was good the backcloth fibres would be visible through it. Nor could I seem to get the lighting right. The smoke would be billowing all over the place too and I'd be tearing my hair out trying to keep it in the frame AND get any sort of decent swirls worth inverting.
I finally turned to DJN for a bit of help (via his blog) and that's where and how I finally managed to get the setup right. So a large dollop of credit goes to the man himself as I got those final shots within a couple of days after following his explanations. JW once had an amazing corkscrew of smoke but I've yet to manage anything like his.
I was discussing it all in depth with Pops recently and he's aiming to have a go as soon as he can have enough space and time alone to set about things. He bought the background cloth just a few days ago so, fingers crossed, it'll work out well for him.
Super Pol...thanks for finding this.
I remember it more clearly now.
Just waiting for postie to deliver some stuff I need and then I'll be giving it a go.

I'm fairly confident you'll get some good results within a few hours as your latest flame shots were almost there already.
I was amazed and chuffed at how quickly it all came together once I'd got the background and kit appropriately spaced and placed.
If fibres of the fabric show through - just increase the distance slightly between the smoke and the background.
I was also thinking how the fabric might make a good backdrop for your roundabout experiments. If the fabric is long enough maybe you could use the front length for a forward 'train' leading from behind and over the table - then the roundabout would appear to be suspended. perhaps it might help show the lights on it too - if you can get the critical shutter speed. I like that picci - nice roundabout too. I wish I had one of those to play with.
The fabric size will be adequate for lots of things including a door sized backdrop for future use. I'm expecting tomorrow, just right for the weekend.
We don't get the roundabout down very often...the music drives us bonkers.
