  • New board for monochrome discussion!

It has been suggested to me on more than one occasion that a board dedicated to black and white and toned monochrome photography would be a good move, so here it is!

I was finally prompted to add this board after reading this week's Amateur Photographer magazine, which is published here in the UK.

This week there is a very technical article by AP veteran contributor, Geoffrey Crawley, about monochrome photography. I wonder if anyone else has read it? I found it very interesting but also a bit unbalanced in favour of black and white film. It appears that Geoffrey only used the standard monochrome conversion action in Photoshop to demonstrate the capability of digital black and white and he didn't approve of the result.

Re: New gallery category for mono images created

I've now added a gallery category dedicated to mono pictures, including three sub-categories for traditional black and white, toned monochrome and high contrast or lith-effect pictures.

If you already have pictures in your gallery that would be suitable for association with the mono categories, you can link them to that category by editing the properties of each picture.

To do this, follow the Edit Photo link from the page in which the picture is displayed, use the 'Copy image to:' option and click on the most suitable category listed in the drop down menu. Categories already associated with your picture will remain associated.

        Hi Ian,

Very good option the new B&W gallery allocation, since B&W photography is the other half of the entire photography art.

Re: New board for monochrome discussion!

Don't read AP much nowadays , but only last night i was browsing a year old 'Digital photographer' that was dedicated to B&W , and thinking of getting back to my roots .
I was thinking of adding a mono album in my gallery , already edited a few shots to start it off .
I think it's a great idea , something i know a few other members will be in full support of .

          B..

I much prefer black and white to colour – always have.
I doubt if I've ever used more than a couple of dozen colour films.
Pity I'm so rubbish in the darkroom (so much so I gave it up as a bad job).
More recently I've started converting colour digital shots to monochrome, but it's funny, I still have to think of them as monochrome when I'm taking them.

              Here here,
I also try to think mono, as well as color, a difficult task but I'm learning.

A great idea, Yes I looked at the mag but left it on the shelf when I read the bias of the mono article, he did not really give digital mono much of a chance, He obviously "in my opinion" does not know much about processing digital mono. Perhaps he should take time to learn like the rest of us before righting it off.

Just what I want to see. I am in the process of starting a new Mono gallery.

As an AP reader on and off for more years than I can remember, I think I can say, without fear of contradiction, that young Geoffrey is quite opinionated. Still, some might say it's better than sitting on the fence!

Puts me in mind of another AP columnist who had strong views - Victor Blackman (no longer with us). If I had a fiver for every picture of his printed in AP of a scantily clad woman "jumping for joy" I'd be a rich man. Apparently women were only attractive to Vic if they were airborne .

There is great mono coverage in this months Photography Monthly. Including Several pages from well known B/W printer Les McClean.
