Storm over Wanaka

Converted this from a colour photo. Didnt take too much conversion as really the only colour of note was in the clear area of sky. Had a bit of a problem with the highlights on the water on the right hand side. This is an inland lake in Central Otago New Zealand. It is glacier fed from high up in the Southern Alps.

Hi Trevor, the jetty or whatever you'd call it (you can tell I'm the nautical type, eh? ) looks good, as do the menacing sky and rays of light. But I can't help feel the horizon is sloping to the left and that burned out sea on the right does trouble me. You've set yourself such a high standard that this doesn't quite work.

This is a more dramatic form which has been more tightly cropped. Unfortunately the burn out sea is still a problem. Probably should scrap it ??

Hi ddigit,
I like this image, very dramatic and moody, If you don't mind a suggestion from a less experienced bod like me, before you scrap the image, could I suggest you try contrast masking, create a new copy layer of the image, invert that layer "ie: Make a negativ" then use opacity to adjust the layers opacity and mess with blend modes to get the desired effect of eliminateing the burned out highlights.It may work ya never know. By the way in my humble opinion, I feel that this is one occasion where the foreground subject Ie: the jetty should be central in the image.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didnt know that technique. I previously tried burning but it was a bit unnatural. Anyway I did what you suggested. It did cut down the highlights but I think that this photo is probably unrecoverable. I will have to be more careful with my exposures in future or shoot raw. Thanks for teaching me something new.
