  • Had a play with Leica's M Monochrom

After last week's news about their new black and white digital M-series camera and my reservations about a mono-only sensor, I got to use the Leica M Monochrom today. Here's a sample image:

Taken with a pre-production Leica M Monochrom fitted with the new Apo-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 lens. My obliging model, by the way, is Josh Waller from ePhotozine, base ISO-320 and f/2.0 at 1/250th sec. Basically this is out of the camera (DNG RAW file) and resized in Lightroom and that's it - no processing.

The bokeh from the lens fantastic and it is clearly very sharp wide open. Here's a 100% crop:

Look out for my hands-on feature article coming very soon

Looks like the perfect model - all that hair should let you see a lot of detail

          Hi Josh,

The question is, did you take a shot of Ian?

Ian, has this brief encounter with the camera changed your opinion on the B&W only sensor?

Base ISO 320 - this seems to be getting higher all the time. Are camera companies in collusion with ND filter manufacturers?

I did take a photo of Ian, but he insisted the Leica camera was in the shot with him, so I had to use his OMD instead

What a poseur, I thought he didn't even like the Leica. Some people act strange when they see red spots in front of their eyes!

What do you think of the OMD Josh?

                Hi Ian,
So, you have had a taste of a 50 Cron ....yummy All versions of the 50 Cron are sweethearts. Mine is a version 3 made in 1980 in Canada. I've had it since 1984 and after 28 years, I almost know the lens.
Do be careful, Ian, handling Leica M cameras and lenses often results in an incureable desire to own and possess........
