Whilst in Angelsey last week I grabbed a few shots of these grasses using the sky as a background. Thought I'd then have a go with B/W and the split toning panels in Lightroom. Whilst in B/W it gives you the option to emphasise certain tones and then add some colour tone. the possibilities are endless.
Yes Stephen, although not a b/w fan, I really like this photograph. I like the simplicity of the composition and I think it suits mono very well.
I shall have to play around with the split toning.
I am always taking photos of bullrushes in all their state of growth and death, finding them absolutely fascinating. Often they almost look mono on a dull day, even when taken in colour.
I like this too, and my cuppa tea, try a more sepia tone, sometimes b&w can look a bit dull depending on the picture, sometimes also its just a matter of personal preference
Ash.
Thanks for the comments Audrey & Ash, much appreciated.
Ash I'm not a great fan of sepia, unless you want an image to look old, and even then it can be overdone IMO. However, when I look again I notice that I actually uploaded the wrong version and the one I intended to use is more toned, see below.
The main benefit of using mono in this shot is that by reducing the blue channel for example, it makes the sky darker. Turn down the Green and it makes green foliage darker, similarly turn up the yellow and it makes the grass heads lighter against the darker sky.
