  • Another fave mono

There seems little point to me putting a shed load of images into ones gallery here and then not showing them on the forums, in order to get some feed back. So with that in mind here is another but more recent favourite. I think why I was so pleased with it is that it was something that came from virtually nothing. The lighting was extreme, lots of highlight and shadow. Yet with some selective processing I managed to get lots of detail in the shot.

You 'aving a go at me
I remember when you put this series on the ''other'' forum Stephen , i commented then that these shots show how a good mono should look .
Nothing has changed my mind another well seen shot , but would it look better in pure mono?

I was always a fan of Agfa papers such as Portriga and Brovira which if you used a warm developer took on a toned look.

Hehe, hey B. I'd be the first to welcome some more of your shots showing on the forums. I'm not having a go at anybody in particularly, and I can sort of understand why peeps put stuff onto some internet gallery sites, I have a couple I pay an annual subscription to, its like a having a 'collection' Its just I see loads of 'bulk' uploads onto the galleries here, and I look forward to seeing them up for critique or comment, even just an explanation of the story behind them, but then nothing

As for my picture in 'pure mono' I presume you mean Black & White. This one along with others in the series were created when I was going through a period of toning using simply the colour balance option in PS with an image I had converted using the Gradient map iirc. Its really up to others to decide if it would be better in any other way. This is, I suppose how I liked it at the time I created it. Its like a piece of fineart, the creator has finalised the end result, its up to others to decide if they like it or not, if they don't its kinda tough hope that makes sense.

            OK two points Stephen.
1st you know that since i joined i've ben advocating some sort of comments for the gallery so that ALL of us can say what we think about every shot without waiting to see if the member is going to put it up for critique or not .
I've put 108(?) images in my gallery , mainly because the space has been increased to allow for it .
Now if i were to put up even 10% for critique i can see a point in which everyone will get so fed up that the replies just dry up .
So i will drip feed the shots in , as and when i feel i need something out of them , in the meantime anyone who wants to browse my gallery can do so .
Now i know that'll come over as big headed , but believe me it's not meant to .
2nd point , about your image , you're dead right , beauty is in the eye of the beholder , it's your image and you're entitled to edit it as you want , i just wondered if you'd done a pure B&W conversion and if you did what you felt about it .

Fair enough, but if more posted their pics your 10% wouldn't be so obvious and there would be more variety.

Well when I originally did the conversion of course, using the gradient map. I suppose I just felt the toning added something at the time, well I still do really

                  Hi Stephen,
Yes another fine photograph, and I can see the problems you had before a very successfull conversion and post process, selective processing is something I am working on at the moment, perhaps I will get some decent results like yours sometime., I do like the toned version, not having seen a pure greyscale/mono version I can't compare or have a preference.

                    Hi Stephen

This photo is it one from the series that you posted sometime ago. As I have said once or twice before I am not a big fan of b/w, but you do prove that it works when used with the right image. I will say that a lot of the camera mags have been doing a lot with b/w lately and it may be changing my mind about the subject.

I also think that its better that people post pictures in the forum and then talk about them. The way I do it is if I see a photo that I like I then go and look at that persons gallery. Having said that I do look at the galleries when I have time.

Thanks Peter, I too bought a copy of Digital Photo and there was a a large section on B/W as well as a CD dedicated to it.

I do the same if I want to check out a person who has posted an image on the forums, it helps me decide what sort of photographer they are. Often I will dig a little further if they have a website, even Google for the person. There is rarely a hiding place if they have a net presence

I'll hold my hands up to that to some extent. But most of my photos have been posted on the old forum so did not think to repost them. Maybe with all the new members we have got its time to change that view and start to post some of them again. Ill repost maybe 2 a week to see what people think about them.

I can see what you like about about this shot i love this sort of decayed look its the sort of thing i loved doing when i shot film a few years ago.
                        Wonderfull.
