I was at a wedding last Sunday and I took some shots of a friend and his wife and baby in very warm, indoor subdued light, without flash. I used ISO 1250 and 1/15th sec shutter speed, at f/2.8. When I looked at the default view of the RAW file in Lightroom I realised the picture would need a lot of work. I increased the exposure by a stop, corrected the white balance, made some quite big adjustments to black and recovery levels, sharpness, and noise reduction. On-screen at 100% it didn't, to be honest, look that great. When I sent the file to my friend I suggested it would be fine for web/email use or for 6x4 prints.
But then I decided to see what it looked like at A4, and I have to say the quality really amazed me - no noise issues, it was sharp, with plenty of detail. I don't know why it should have had this effect on me as I do know that prints often look better than when previewing the file on-screen.
Anyway, I was so pleased with the result that it motivated me to post this message to the forum!
The moral is - don't give up if you aren't very happy with an image; try printing it!
