  • Paper Chase

I have today printed some A3 size pix on Epson Photo quality glossy paper to make sure I am getting what I want before using an expensive paper.

I use Qimage printing software and an Epson 1800 printer.

I have a question possibly needing two answers and many replies to form an opinion.

What do you use and recommend for say portraits and general run of the mill pix please?

    Kind regards. Barr1e

ps Posted on another forum as I wish to gain as much info as possible.

      Hi Barrie

My setup is a Epson R2400 with PermaJet CIS fitted, for exhibition favourite paper PermaJet Royal, Hahnemuhle fine art pearl.
For general stuff I'm not above using Jessops own brand.

          Re: Paper Chase

          Hi Barr1e,

Basically, there are three basic paper types: glossy, semi-gloss (also like pearl or lustre) and matt (which would include other fine art textured finishes, like canvas). To use matt type papers, you need a printer that has a matt black ink option.

As Josh mentioned, paper profiling is important when not using printer manufacturer papers. If you choose to use a paper not supported directly by the printer's printer driver, you will need to obtain or make a profile for that combination of paper and printer types.

What kind of paper finish are you leaning towards?

            Re: Paper Chase

The FB papers from manufacturers such as, Harman, Galerie Gold, Permajet, Fotospeed or Hahnamule give richer blacks than the none FB papers as well as loosing that plastic look. This gives more depth to colour and for B/W produces images that could be from the darkroom.
As pointed out profiling is of great benefit, They can usually be downloaded from the paper manufacturers website.
For that extra ounce of quality custom profiles are the way to go. Permajet, and Fotospeed will write them free for their own papers.

              Hi all -

I am most pleased with the many replies. Thanks very much.

It seems a test pack is the way to reseach my needs.

After using Epson solely for quite some time I stumbled across another in their range recently which made such an improvement on the Epson papers previously used that it got me thinking others could be using even better.
In the main I use gloss - semi gloss - and matt.

              Again, thanks.
