Printer Papers

Has anyone any experience of using different printer papers ?

The reason I ask is that up till now, I've only used either a cheap glossy paper, or an HP matte paper.

Does a particular paper work best with a certain printer ?

I have a Canon Pixma ip5300, and when using a standard HP glossy paper, although it look 'fine', when you look at it from certain ways, it appears 'grainy' .... not sure what the technical term for it is !!
Is this down to the printer, or down to the paper ?

I've tried printing on my Canon, Epson and Brother printers ....

Anyone got any recommendations .....?

I seem to remember someone saying about a 'fibre based' paper when they were printing out black and white. I can't remember the name ..... think it started with an E, but wasn't Epson ...

Anyway, I may try out a few different one, as I've got some nice shots that I would like to keep on the walls .... (I know I can get them printed professionally, but I'd like to at least try a couple first !!)

If I fail miserably then it'll be a trip to Jessops, or 7dayshop.com do an online print service which works pretty well, or there is a local firm who are willing to print to any size, even on canvas ..... which is tempting

Jay, which HP paper are you using? They produce two types and only one will work near nornmally on your Canon printer - which is HP Advanced. HP Premium Plus, for example, is designed for use specifically with HP printers using a paper-specific print mode.

One lot is a box of 190gm Epson - Glossy, and the other one is 210gm HP glossy. Apart from that ..... some cheap 255gm Kirkland for running off some quick 6x4 's or 5x7 's or A4 'handouts'.

Now that I've re-read your suggestions .... the name Illford rings a bell. A couple of month ago at our local photography club, a guy who had got his accrediation for photography did say that he used Iilford papers.

I'll pay more attention next time I go !!

Hey Jay, that Kirkland paper is not at all bad stuff. Its a good weight and though my printer (Ep2100) is not usually great with Glossy paper, it doesn't give a bad result. I use it especially if I need to produce contact sheets.

For anyone who doesn't know Kirkland is the Costco own brand label, like St Michael is to M&S

The Kirkland does work well, but if I print off an A4 glossy, and it doesn't 'look' right ..... probably just me !!

Think I'll invest in a couple of different types and do some experimenting. Non-glossy, 'porous', .... try anything once !!

Yes offcourse a particular paper work best with a certain printer .

After trying loads of different papers, cheap or expensive, I have settled on Ilford. I find that the Gallery Smooth Pearl gives excellent results from my Canon printers.
