    Fat lot of good

The RSPB is warning that cooked turkey fat is extremely dangerous to birds. Many people put the leftover contents of Christmas dinner roasting tins outside, wrongly believing that it is as beneficial to birds as other fats like lard and suet. They pour the fat onto bird tables or mix it with seed thinking it will give birds energy and nutrients. But the wildlife charity is warning that it could actually kill them.

That's very interesting - so do we know why it's dangerous? I wonder if it's the fat itself or the likely high salt content after cooking? In which case, many fats might be dangerous? I know I've learned that salt in cooked foods is not good for our chickens.

Tonight was the last meeting of the photo club until the new year, our speaker was a guy called David Tideswell a bird expert.
He confirmed cooked turkey to be harmful to small birds, reasons were blood content and the fact that the fat goes rancid very quickly, after about 2 hours. Also it does not get hard enough and can get into the birds feathers, it can also clog up the beak.
This guy does a fanatic talk, a laugh a minute, if you are looking for a speaker for your club, women's institute or any interested gathering I can highly recommend him even if you care nothing for birds.

        Pure entertainment.

Thanks for that info Pops, although I don't have a garden, I've put that info on facebook so other birds and people can benefit.
