Acer Aspire 9301AWSMi so, a top-tier brand as well (Stephen has an Acer I believe?).

    Yes, very happy with this!

Yes, although mine has a different processor (P4) its seems like a very similar spec. I've been well pleased with mine, and is used as a desktop all the time now. Infact I got rid of my previous desktop machine with its crt monitor, and my son uses it at Uni now

Kidding aside, I think the price for the of the unit I went for is exceptional. The only better 17" deal on price was a lower spec. Acer Aspire (Sempron processor instead of a Turion and less frills too).

Makes me wonder if there is a glut of Acers on the market at the moment, so keeping prices down. It might be end of life too as newer models now have SATA hard drives instead of EIDE and PCI Express architecture motherboards.

          But I'm happy

Unbelievable how much PC's are coming down in price now.
I think in the new year, I am going to treat myself to a desktop.

I currently use a 512meg ram, 30GB hard drive Toshiba Satellite laptop, and it is pretty slow. Only 900quid for it though a couple of years ago...

I am toying with the idea of taking the plunge and building my own....has to be Vista comaptable though and be able to run Aero!

                  Hi Ian

Yes that looks like a good deal but I have just upgraded to this in the last few days .

My old Acer 3000 was going down hill fast. about a year ago it stared to over heat and ended up cracking the mother board. I had that fixed but now it was over heating so no point spending money on having it fixed better to put that towards an upgraded. I will say the picture quality on this is so good. I hope to be using photoshop over the weekend so it will be fun to see how that goes the old one was so slow.

The real sad thing about this is that's another Ferrari thing that has gone from my life

                    Its looks amazing Stephen.

Part of the Aero package is called 'glass' and it displays opaque windows.

Also the alt+tab can have windows that flip round in a 3D envirnment.

                        Re: Laptop PC bargain

Yes your HP is quite highly specified, but it is twice the price of our new Acer

You have 2GB RAM, an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 120GB SATA drive, PCI Express and a LightScribe DVD writer. I might have expected a higher res screen and do you have a built in Webcam?

I have a four year old Sony PictureBook C1MHP. Crusoe 0.87GHz CPU - but it does far less than the competition per clock cycle, so I reckon it's about a fifth of the speed of the 2GHz AMD Turion in the new Acer here.

But it only weighs a kilo, has an 8.9 inch screen (1280x600) so it can be used virtually anywhere - it's like an over grown PDA. Unfortunately it maxes out at 384MB and 16MB of that is pinched by the CPU, so you can't even install Photoshop CS2, let alone run it.

So it will be time to upgrade that next year. Really fancy the new Sony Vaio TX3. It's a bit larger (11 inch screen) than the PictureBook, but just as good to look at and to carry. I'm hoping the CPU will be upgraded soon as it's only a 1.2GHz Intel Core Solo at the moment.
