Re: Dr Who
I certainly hope you're right.
For the longest time it seemed like those responsible believed that no one else could run the show besides Russell T Davies. There's no denying that he ended up in the position where he was able to bring the show into the public eye and make it popular again, but it's important that they realise that the show is bigger than one man. Several other people tried to bring Doctor Who back over the years (including Doctor Who's original producer - Verity Lambert) but the BBC kept knocking them back. Such talented people could have brought the show to new heights, just as Davies has. It's not like no one else is out there.
What kept the show fresh in the old days was that the production team would change. It did seem for a while that those responsible believed that if Davies and his crew decided to move on then the show would be over. Of course I don't know that for sure, but why else didn't it get budgeted for once they knew Davies and the others were bowing out?
It seems that someone (presumably with an older and wiser head) realised that the current team pulling out was not a hurdle, rather it's something that should be welcomed. I've found the current series getting just a little bit on the "samey" side. After four years of having the episodes either written by Davies, shopping listed by Davies, and modified/altered by Davies, it's no wonder the ideas have run out. It's very much the time to get new people in so the show can move on - before it falls into the trap of the "10 year producer" of the 80s (and I'm sure no one wants that to happen).
What's important now is that the new team come in with fresh ideas and don't just try to mimic the "Davies era". It's an exciting time for the series and I'm looking forward to 2010 enormously.
