What an amazing escape that was this lunch time. I just can't believe that the BA 777 managed to make it - by a matter of a few feet - over the perimeter fence and then land on the rough ground and come to a halt just on the first few feet of the south run way. That must have been one hell of a deceleration. The plane stopped in a 200-300 feet instead of a thousand yards or so.
Speculation is that the pilot lost all power just a few seconds out so he had to basically glide this huge plane down - amazing!
I suppose I have a special interest as I was on an Emirates 777 that aborted the landing just after passing over the runway because the last plane to land hadn't cleared the runway ahead. That was, er, fun!
It could have been so much worse - taking cars out on the perimeter road and of course there could have been a fire - but so far only 13 injured and the worst is a broken leg and on case of whiplash. Amazing.
