  • Watching an old movie today

Well to some it will be old but to me its just a great movie. Rocky, ok get it over with have a laugh, yes I know not one of the all time greats but when you watch the message it tells of a man and his struggle to make something of himself it makes a great film. I finished watching it and then went on to watch Rocky 2 which also tells the same sort of story. Tonight I plan to watch Rocky 3 which will do for now as after this I think it just went on to be a bit too much of a flag waving exercise for the US. Now the reason I have posted this is to find out what films you have watched, and now find a new meaning in, compared to how you first saw it.

"Zulu" one of the best IMO British film ever made.

Message, well that would depend very much on whether you are a Zulu or a Brit.
Cracking good entertainment, well acted true story, the events glorified for political reasons in Victorian times. The follow up film instead of "Zulu Dawn" should I think have been about the surviving soldiers when they returned to England, after being hailed as heroes most died within a few years. The Victorians knew nothing of trauma, but that didn't stop these men suffering from it.

Rocky is a great film, and the new Rocky (Balboa) is suprisingly excellent also!

The films that I have seen new meaning in, are the old Bond films....... the first time round, as I was so young, I did not 'get' the smuttiness, and all the inuendos. Watching them now though....well, I am suprised just how much naughtiness there is! All great stuff!

Actually just finished watching a new Western film, 3:10 to Yuma, what an awesome film!

By the way, if your a Stallone film....how about one of my favourite old films......Death Race 2000

Patrick I will admit that I have not seen all of Zulu but I have seen most of it at different times. I am not sure what sort of movies most people are into but I did like sin city and pulp fiction as these are movies that make you think about what is going on all the way through.

Ben I know what you mean about the Bond movies they are full of inuendos just look at the Bond girls names for a start . Death race 2000 now that is a blast from the past I bet a lot of people will not have heard of it. I did have a copy kicking around here on video a few years ago but now everything I have is now on dvd. Well maybe not everything I do have a few f1 videos but the sad thing is I no longer have a video player in the house . I was hoping to go and watch Rambo 4 at the local cinema but it does not seem to show up in the upcoming film lists on its website.

Sorry Ben but the link takes me to Rocky 6. I said Rambo 4. I saw a trailer for it last year and it looked a bit like the first one in the fact that it had a story not just a bit of flag waving for the us of a.

Oh and while we are talking about Rambo that first film was also a great film which had a story of one mans struggle on his return from war.

Re: Watching an old movie today

I got Blade Runner, The Final Cut, for Christmas, which is one of my favourite films of all time, but I've not had the chance to watch it yet . I'm looking forward to this digitally remastered version on my 1080p s e t u p but I really need everyone out of the house to enjoy it to the full because I need peace & quiet to concentrate - i.e. no background "chatter" or interruptions. (Like "why are you watching this rubbish - I've sky+ 'd Strictly Come Dancing, The X Factor, Goldenballs, etc etc and need to watch them all - preferably one after the other - and we've still got 2 episodes of Emmerdale and Coronation Street to catch up on..." )

One of my other favourites, that I did watch over the holidays, is The Fifth Element but I suppose that doesn't count as an "old film"

To be honest, I'll watch and enjoy most movie genres from the old black & whites (The Third Man is a favourite) right up to the modern-day Bourne series. I'm of an age that means "cowboy" and "war" films were a staple diet during my youth although I now realise that many of them were not actually that faithful to the real world at the time. Doesn't stop me watching and enjoying them though.

Sounds like my house to a tee But I also have to put up with stuff like diy sos and ready steady cook and the like. Saturdays is a good day for me to catch up with what I want to watch on my own.

I had the Bourne series box set for Christmas and watched that while the house was empty. As for cowboy films I think one of the best of the modern ones was the forgiven. i do like most films the only stuff that I do not like is horror.

This thread is really showing up a small generation gap , my view of old films is very different to what you guys consider old films.
Blade Runner and the like are not really that old, well I go back a little further.

"The Third man" mentioned is a Classic (I was a very young child when I saw that for the first time and it was a re-release then), the Ealling comedies of which "Kind Hearts & Coronets" must be the possibly the best.
The old version of " The Importance of Being Earnest" is simply wonderful, the modern one though very good missed that something.

As to westerns will for me its probably a toss up between "The Outlaw Jossie Wales" and "Once Upon A Time In The West"
Going further back before I was born there are classics like Goodbye Mr Chips, and the wonderful Betty Davies in her prime in "Now Voyager". both rather soppy films which I don't normally go for.
My favorite modern film at the moment is "Batman the Beginning" very much the best of all the Batman films.

Yes I see what you mean about a little bit of an age gap . I just turned 40 last week and it seems that most of the films I liked came out in the 80s which now seems so long ago . I have a pretty good a/v setup so I like to watch most films at home without the distractions that come with being in the cinema. Thinking about it I guess that most of my film favorites would come under the title of action movies. Love all the die hard films and also stuff like conspiracy type films.

There you go, I was 24 when you were born and the 80's seem but a handful of years ago.
In general I don't care much for modern movies with the odd exception like "Batman the Beginning", and the new Bond "Casino Royal" was I feel one of the very best of all the Bond films, seen them all except the the George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton one's.

I have only seen the one Die Hard film, the one with Allen Rickman and he for me was the best thing in it. He also stole "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves"
