  • Whaaaaat..?

Read this and try to keep your chin from hitting the table...

Ok, so it's based on little more than conjecture as things stand today, but it's also fair to say that professional journalists tend to make it their business to know the right people in the right places..........so who really knows?

Imagine that, another opportunity for Lewis to demonstrate his superior speed and racecraft in an identical car. And with a full season's experience under his belt, too...

It's hard to swallow, I'll admit that.

But stranger things have happened in F1, and it certainly looks as though his Renault option could be severely compromised by a potential disqualification from the constructors' championship in 2008, along with a massive financial penalty.

Red Bull isn't a viable option for a man looking to win titles, so perhaps he and his management are becoming desperate, with the alternative being a whole season out of contention or even worse, out of F1 altogether......

I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

To my mind, there is no way Alonso would go back to that nest of vipers. He'd be better off taking a "gap year" if he can't find anyone willing to give him a one-year seat. If he did do the foolish thing and return to McLaren it would be under their terms and he would most certainly be the "number 2" driver - and probably rightly so. In such circumstances, I can't see him even contemplating it.

It surprises me that McLaren would even be considering it. In their eyes, Alonso caused them nothing but trouble. Why open all that again? What they really need is another driver that's in Ron Dennis' pocket and will tow the party line. They don't want another rogue element. They must have learned that from 2007, surely?

More logically, the phrase "McLaren have re-opened 'lines of communication' with Alonso's management" could simply be to nudge Alonso into making a decision on where he wants to go so that McLaren will know which other F1 driver will be out of a seat next year - then they can go and poach them.

It's all well and good for Alonso to wait until the 11th hour to make a decision, but a team like McLaren will be wanting to know who they're going to have partnering Lewis.
