  • fave guitar solo

just started learning to play the axe for real rather than strangling the air guitar in the motor, which got me tubin' for standards to aim for and came across eddie van halen doing 'eruption' live. totally unreal. can't tube from work so can't check the link, but i think this is it - http://www.youtube.com/v/XGP3kv1_56I

worth checking out if you're even vaguely interested in seeing a technically stunning bit of axework.

    anyone got any personal faves?

Wow - and that's an understatement. Just watched the link and the shivers are still cursing up and down my back! Completely mesmerising.

Fast and furious don't make it entertaining or good.

You still cant beat the old man Eric Clapton, Electric or acoustic he is equally at home.
Carlos Santana is in a league of his own.

Ry Cooder can show em how to do it as well.

Yngwie Malmsteen or Joe Satriani ...... in a whole league of their own !

Malmsteen is blindingly fast, and yet he can create such rich sounds with such ease ...... without even trying.

Also like the solos on Stars ... the Hear'n'Aid single from .... way back !!

                Incredible ...

... currently logged into Last.fm to listen to my son's latest offerings! He's not a professional, just an enthusiastic amateur. It probably won't be to most people's tastes as it's just a general musing... and it's also very long

sorry patrick, but that clip shows a true master at work. watching without sound and seeing the way his hands dance over the fretboard is simply mesmerising. watching with sound and appreciating what's been thrown into that piece blows me away.
personally, i've not seen anything that comes remotely close to the technical expertise shown in that one clip alone. entertaining? hell yes! good? to be able to sling THAT solo together and not hit a bum note?
as usual though, it's horses for courses ;-)

Have you heard of the late Harry Chapin? not himself a master guitarist, good but not a master.

He used to sing a song about an old blues man listening to a young guitarist can't remember the title but thats not important.

Criticizing the youth he refers to playing it like Machine Gun Kelly and goes on to sing "stroke it like your sweet mamas pajamas" Great line that.

Glad you enjoy it, but I like to hear something more than a guy practicing his scales however fast and well its done.
My formative years was through the 60's & 70's and there was load's of this sort of stuff played then, and I will concede I did appreciate it at that time but now I look for a great deal more these days.

I suppose I am saying less is more.

Taking part in this discussion prompted me to dig into the record collection, pulled out "Live Cream" there is Eric Clapton punching it out just as fast as your guy, along with Jack Bruce hailed at the time as the best base guitar player around, and Ginger Baker a true master of the drums.

                        Happy Days
