Just recently, almost every second person I've spoken to has or is using Facebook to download pics to share photos with family & friends! My family in South Africa sent me messages to join up, so that we could easily see one anothers latests pics of neices & nephews etc. I noticed that the downloadable file size on there is 4mb & wondered how come there was such a difference to downloadable size on dpNow galleries!

    Hi Jocelyn,

Just to make things clear - you're referring to indidvidual file sizes?

First of all, DPNow is a small organisation with relatively limited resources. Secondly, our gallery service is provided to display web-resolution images and the standard allowance of 10MB, in total, should be adequate for at least 50 800x600, low compression, JPEG images at around 200K each.

If you run out of your 10MB allowance, we'll almost certainly give you more space if you ask, as long as that space is being put to to good and efficient use Many of our users have 50MB (250+ picture) allowances, for example.

Thirdly, it's in the interests of our visitors that over-size and over-weight pictures aren't encountered, slowing the browsing process down.

    Hope that explains things

      Re: Family Photos

Thanks Ian. I am very satisfied with the amount of space I have on dpNow, was just interested in finding out why there would be a difference as my knowledge on websites isn't that wide! I do have 50MB, being one of the members given that opportunity! 4MB per file does seem huge, but wondered if 1Mb or 1.5MB was a norm for most or bigger websites! Digital Camera I think is 1.5! I could be mistaken though. Thanks anyhow for your reply.

Another thing to consider Jocelyn, is that ,many people on this site sell their pictures, and I for one, wouldnt want to put a fill size high res picture in the gallery, for fear of it being nicked!

Yes you are right there, I wouldn't like to give anyone the chance of nicking photos! I hadn't thought of that! I would hate that! As I said, I was just interested to know how it worked & wasn't complaining! I'm really happy with dpNow, as its not only the gallery space available, but the forum & its 'social' sense as it were! Its great!

Just to emphasize the above, I know for a fact that three of my images scanned from negatives, from a previous site have been nicked and sold by someone else, but proving it is another matter, and I am not anywhere near a proffesional level photographer.

This is an increasingly disappointing aspect of the Web. We (DPNow) are in the process of seeking compensation from a software company (no less!) after finding out that they downloaded a full resolution sample image from the site and flagrantly used it in their marketing materials without our knowledge or permission.
