  • Is South Africa headed for disaster?

I am not quite sure where to put this but need to write it. I am an African with a white skin. I spent time in England, 4 and a half years to be pretty precise. On Friday, My President made a speech that ensured we, the white population of South Africa knew where he stood. Not since Hitler has such an obviously xenophobic speech been made. I and many others feel that he has set back race relations in this country by years.

The majority of the South Africans have been working toward removing racism for the last 14 years. We have a major crime problem, 50 murders a day, to put this in perspective in Iraq about 63 people are dieing a day. Our esteemed president blamed the problem on white racists. It is our fear of the black population that makes us complain about crime, according to Mr Mbeki. I wonder how he justifies that when many thousands of his own tribe are complaining about crime.

I fear for South Africa with a bigot at the helm. Anybody know where a Web developer and junior photographer can get a job in the UK. I have the neccessary Visas and more to live and work there. I need to move my kids and family before we become victims, or South Africa becomes a second Zimbabwe.

I feel concerned for you but helpless and wish I could say something useful.

How about doing some in-depth web searches for UK or other European job vacancies?

Another suggestion could be to try to contact anyone and everyone you knew and/or worked with in the UK and ask if they can help, or at least give you some pointers.

Another possibility could be to aim for any sort of job, anything that would be sufficient to get back into the UK and provide for the family. Just enough to keep a roof over your heads and put some food on the table ....... then aim for something better once you're back over here and more able to pursue what you'd really like to be doing.

How about bookmarking and regularly searching the sits vac colums in the UK National papers (The Times, Telegraph, Guardian etc) along with specific and relevant trade publications?

Pol that was a semi rhetorical question unless someone is looking for someone, But when I have decided to return to the UK, But will look for a job when I get there. I am just currently disgusted with the situation. We will play it by ear over the next few months. I need to make some decisions and will with time.

Guy, why do you think I left my beloved country behind? The crime rate has been dreadfull for the past 10 years & worsening! With an unimployment rate of 40% or more by now, as that was 5 years ago, it IS a disaster, not heading for disaster! Other countries bleat when unimployments at 4%!! It's only when you leave South Africa & immigrate to a country like Australia as I did, that you look back & wonder how the hell one survived the angst! The angst of daily life, looking over your shoulder every few seconds when you are driving your car, constantly on the look out for someone that might stick a gun in your face when you stop at a set of traffic lights! Or have a friend (that works with you) shot 7 times & killed on his way to work in the morning, for the car he drives! Or on one occassion whilst sleeping in my bed at 2am, waking on hearing sawing the security gate 3 feet to the left of me! Or looking out the office window & seeing someone have a gun stuck in their face when they got into their car, parked in the street! Eikona! But, people from South Africa aren't afforded the status of refugee!!
