Happy new year Ian. I wonder what technology will bring for 2014?

      That's a very good question!

I think we will see ultra high definition video (4K) support in consumer cameras for the first time this year.

Apart from that I am struggling to come up with any other predictions, although full field cameras (which produce images that can be re-focused) will improve and become more prominent, possibly featured in a smartphone too.

      Any other prediction anyone?

Happy new year To you and family. What about surprises in huge megapixels for smartphones (like lumia 1020) and retractable lenses in them instead of digital zooming...

In line with my previous idea, I got through this article concerning comparison between smatphones and high end DSRL that deserves reading it... ¿shows the future? http://connect.dpreview.com/post/553...lr-versus-film

I think high-resolution smartphones like the Nokia Lumia 1020 and the Sone Xperia Z1 are already highlights of last year and have already established a trend that is bound to be followed by others.

The problem with lenses on smartphones is that they add a lot of weight and bulk to smartphones that most users don't want. Even the Nokia 1020 is considered by some to be too big.

Samsung has gone all the way and combined an Andorid smartphone with a compact camera with a zoom lens, but I'm not convinced that is a solution with widespread appeal. I personally like the Sony QX idea of attaching a 'lens' (it's actually a camera module that attaches to a smartphone and uses its host for the screen and controls via wifi). But I was a bit surprised to find that many people thought this would not be a winner either.
