How does light pollution affect where you live?

Do you remember when you could see the Milky Way overhead on a clear night, only now to see an orange glow?

Or is it still the same as it's always been?

      Hi,
Yes I remember as a child looking up on most nights and seeing the stars and working out which was which, especially on a clear winters evening/night, "and planning my future as the next great space explorer) never could work out why that wooden space ship us kids built never took off.
Now, being serious, only now and again do the skys seem anywhere near as clear as I remember, and yes the light polution is very very bad nowdays, I have no Idea what the answer is, if the lights were dimmed everywhere you would get complaints from people on the grounds of safety, industry could not function at night, does anyone have an answer?

        Excellent Stu,

Well, I will definately sign this. However, I am aware there is a fine balance between getting our night sky back, and making residence feel safe, especially in this day and age. But maybe more thoughtfull street lighting is required.

I know I have posted this before, but this extended exposure shows what light pollution can do, this light is produced from a town a few miles away as this picture was taken in the evening by a canal!

Cheers for the photo, it does show how it blocks our view of the sky, but in another way it shows how good it can look in a photograph.
Like you say it just needs a balance, after all we only need the ground lit up not the sky, OK there will be some reflected light off some surfaces, but nothing like a few thousand lights pointing up.

            Re: Light Pollution Petition

A volunteer astronomical organization here in the States has been working many years to sensitize the public to light pollution. They have been relatively successful, and many lighting manufacturers now produce home, commercial and street lighting which is more efficient and greatly restricts light pollution. And the total cost for purchase and operation is reduced from the polluting fixtures.

            Good Luck.

I know what you're all saying, and I'm very lucky that I live in a small village (population under 600, about 200 houses) which probably doesn't have more than 10-15 lamp posts so my view of the sky is beautiful.

Our village is on the top of a hill, and I look down on several larger villages - which do cause a glow low in the sky to the north east of me.

This was taken on a particularly clear night a couple of weeks ago, just after the full moon:

I know.... more practice needed.. I couldn't find my tripod, so steadied myself against the top of a handy parked car!

By the way - I'll be signing the petition too.

I'm fortunate to live in an area without street lighting (and pavements) - that makes for an interesting walk to the local pub! I have, however, signed this petition for the benefit of others

                    Re: Light Pollution Petition

I am in the same boat as jojo, but the pub is not really local (12 miles). We notice light pollution from the Sullom Voe terminal which is quite bad, otherwise we see the stars including the milky way when it's not cloudy. This has not been possible for the past couple of months due to the amount of rain we have had, and therefore cloud. Have signed the petition though.

                      Re: Light Pollution Petition

There is me thinking my local is far at 1.5 miles.

The whole of the UK was once nice and dark, but it's always on the increase with lights popping up all over, soon it could be in everyones area, sadly.
