  • Patrick Moore

Sad news today. I don't know if I had got to meet and know him personally whether I'd have liked him, but irrespective of that I can unhesitatingly say that like many others I was inspired by his broadcasts and I can remember him way back to the 1960s, even before the 1969 moon landings.

I have been fascinated by science and, in particular, astronomy, for as long as I can remember and Patrick Moore was a particular influence.

I rather liked the comment made today (unfortunately I don't now who by) that went; he was the Brian Cox of black and white TV

    Re: Patrick Moore

Despite him seeming to be a permanent BBC fixture of The Sky At Night for so long, I know very little about him.

He did appear in the radio dramatisation of Independence Day UK on Radio 1 back in 1996. (This radio adventure was Dirk Maggs' effort to demonstrate that, despite what the movie may have suggested, America isn't the whole world.) Patrick Moore, playing himself, takes the place of a navigator at one point in the story.

I haven't listened to it for many years but now, with the passing of Patrick Moore, I think it's time that I did.

I remember his programmes very well now its been bought up. His passion of astronomy came across very strong. I knew about his wartime experience but didn't know the fact re his fiancee.

Very sorry to hear the news. As a TV Meteorologist in the seventies who shared the same name, I was very familiar with him. I still own one of his books that I bought over thirty years ago.

Hey Pat - what a coincidence

Our 'Pat Moore' was a quintessentially eccentric British character.

He certainly had a long and very productive life. I'm proud to have shared a name with him.

The question is, Pat - are you a quintessentially American eccentric?

                    Without a doubt.

And I do have roots from that side of the pond. I'm descended from Sir Thomas Baudrey, 1480-1534 Lord Mayor of London and my 35th great grandfather was Malcolm I, King of Scotland 897-954. Gotta love ancestry.com
