It's a flowering bush (photographed in early June). The flower is about 5-6cm across.
Reminds me of a Hibiscus but as it seems to thrive outdoors here in England, I somehow doubt it is one!

You're right Ian - that's an hibiscus. There are many varieties around, and some are quite hardy.

A Cistus, or Orchid Rockrose.
