  • Deer Alert

We were saddened to see yet another Deer/vehicle collision a couple of days ago. Two deer leapt out into the road very suddenly (from a wooded area) and were both killed by a car, causing shock and trauma to the elderly driver some damage to the car (a small hatchback).

I hate it when that happens, it's very distressing to all concerned, causes a lot of problems, drivers all hit the brakes, cars slide into hedges trying to avoid a pile-up ..... and the animals lie dead or dying by the roadside.

It's a fairly common occurence around here - they're sometimes seen to leap from one side of the road to the other, straight over the top of passing cars, others aren't so lucky and they get hit. Drivers get injured too - it's a very unpredictable hazard.

We use a 'Deer Whistle' on our vehicles and it does reduce the incidents of deer suddenly running out from 'nowhere' and into or across the road. The whistling alerts the Deer, inaudible to humans. Not very expensive and they could save you from a nasty incident, save the life of a Deer or maybe even your own life.

We still see them - but they tend to stop and stare, or wander warily along the verge rather than running out. The whistles definitely help. If you're likely to be in an area populated by wild Deer - plese consider fixing an alert to your vehicle here's a link

Dunno, I'll ask next time one of the vehicles goes in for servicing. I don't think it's likely though 'cos we don't have wild Elephants in the SE of England.

Its a yank product, I checked and am awaiting a response re other types of Buck, antelope and munchkins on the sides of African roads. I asked about elephant cos I saw the results of an irate bull a few years ago. The problem with hitting a tusker is that they get upset and rip the car apart.

Good for you. You'll feel just that little bit safer and maybe be spared the terrifying experience of an animal suddenly appearing and leaping over the car in front of you.

I nipped out and grabbed a snapshot of the one we have fixed to the camper. It's on a Peugeot Boxer base vehicle and you'll see how it's fitted, circled in blue. They're very small, fixed on with a special adhesive (two- sided tape I think) that comes with the whistle. The garage fitted this one, it's sitting in a gap low down on the moulded bumper, not visible unless you look for it.

Run into several deer while driving through Ashdown forest , although there are ''beware of deer'' signs every 200yds some drivers drive like maniacs through those dark lanes .
Never done any serious injury to either deer or car , but i've had a buck jump the bonnet and another just ignore me a wander down the middle of the road for 20minutes before taking off .
