  • What would you do ? sell them or keep them ?

A Californian man bought a collection of old negatives in a garage sale for $45. They turned out to be 65 missing Ansel Adams originals from the 1920's and 1930's thought to have been destroyed in a fire. The collection represents approximately 1/3rd of Adams' total output and almost everything from his early years. Estimated value $200 million.

Rick Norsigian, a Californian antique buff, knew exactly what he was looking for when he went rooting through a Fresno garage in 2000. He was looking for a vintage barber's chair, to add to his eclectic collection of old telephone switchboards, petrol pumps and aeroplane propellers. But when the chair turned out to be a dud, he chanced upon something that changed his life: two boxes of antique glass negatives which, a Beverly Hills art appraiser declared yesterday, were the work of Ansel Adams, the father of American photography.

I might sell all but my favourite one or two.

But to be frank, the value of these pictures is more for their historic than aesthetic value. If I was a billionaire, would I have bought this in the first place? No. So yes I would have sold them.

Absolutely right Ian, the questions was a little tongue in cheek really. I doubt there is anyone who would keep them, other than one or two as you say. The rightful place is in a museum and this is almost certainly where the bulk of them will end up. The Getty perhaps ? But what a find !
