  • UK General Election

Haha! Nobody has mentioned it here on the off-topic board

So how will it pan out?

The opinion polls suggest a hung parliament with the Conservatives ending up with the most seats, but well short of the 326 they need for a working majority.

The BBC interactive widget is great if you haven't seen it (may not be accessible out of the UK):

BBC, News, BBC News, news online, world, uk, international, foreign, british, online, service

But I'm not sure the opinion polls have got it right. Historically, they tend to under-play the Conservative hand and over-play the Labour vote. So If I were a betting man, I'd put a small amount of money on the Conservatives just scraping the 326 target, or perhaps just being a few short, not the 25-40 seats short that the opinion polls suggest.

My vote is my secret, but I really don't want to see a hung parliament!

What do you think will happen?

          Re: UK General Election

I've got a bet on a hung parliament so I'm hoping it happens.

I also think it would be good to break the two party system and a hung parliament is prob the most realistic way of it happening. I mean what's the problem? All it means is that MPs are going to have to work together and behave like grown ups.

Oh, er, hang on a minute...

Widget works fine here in Florida. It's neat. I was hoping it would list all the parties in other. I always wanted to vote for the Raving Green Loonies (I think that was it). Anyway, Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin are going to win so we can send them over to you.

No Monster Raving Looney party standing in our constituency so I can't vote for them this time.

Anyway, if you send us Beck and Palin we will have to exchange some of our less cherished politicians - how many boatloads would you like, we have plenty to spare?

That really was funny. And now for an update from America: A LIVE poll on one of the political websites

"Today we're all Brits! Who would you like to see as Prime Minister most?

Gordon Brown of Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath (Labour)
                        10% 83 votes
Nick Clegg of Sheffield Hallam (Liberal Democrat)
                        67% 563 votes
                        David Cameron of Witney (Conservative)
                        4% 35 votes
Elizabeth II of the Palace of Buckingham (Asskicker)
                        18% 154 votes"

Well Julia and I did leave it late to vote as Julia was at a school governors meeting this evening, but we got to the polling station at about 9:30 and there were no queues. So it's quite weird for us to hear of problems at other polling stations with voters being turned away...

                              Re: UK General Election

Well, that as fascinating - I think a lot of people (including me) ridiculed the exit poll because of the very low Lib Dem prediction, but it was pretty much right, and my hunch of the Conservatives getting to within 10 seats of an overall majority was just a bit too optimistic, but the actual result was much closer to my own personal prediction than the last poll of polls prediction before voting.

Yes, I stayed up all night and now I'm paying for it! ZzzzZzzz zzz z zzz z
