Actually, I would have expected a small partition to be already there, containing your systen files for creating a recovery CD or DVD.
Do you have a ready-made recovery disc?
Why partition your disk anyway, our of interest?
Ian
I always partition, using the C: drive for system and programs. I move my documents to the partition, this way if windows crashes and its nessasery to format the C: drive and re-install, my data remains save.
I find about one third for system and two thirds for data works for me.

I have the reinstallation disk with Windows 7 on it.
I was partitioning my disk for the reasons Patrick gave, but I have not done it yet.
ATM I am struggling with the network.
I can see my PC and the printer, but not my files and yet I can get the files off my husband's machine. I suppose there are some wrongly ticked boxes.
Oh yes, and when I try to print it acts as though it is printing but it throws out a blank page.
Any ideas?
Should I be able to back up this laptop to the external hardrive attached to my PC or do I have to physically move the external hard drive and plug it in to my laptop.
ATM this question is hypothetical as I can't see the contents of my desktop PC, but I mean if I could?
Autumn - You are not he only one who is struggling with your network, I like you have just upgraded to Windows 7 from XP and I just cannot get my network of three computers to work consistently. One minute everything is Ok and each one can see the others files and read them , next minute I can see the computers but get a message 'Computer A is not accessible'.!! So many windows and boxes to tick off and set correctly. Why oh why can't Microsoft make setting up a network simpler by proviidng a route map with precise instructions to follow.

Indeed Dennis, though I suspect there are plenty of Win7 users with networks that work perfectly. It really is hard to come up with a reason why you are having so many probs.
I'm not wanting to appear smug in any way, but my Apple network works perfectly every time. I have a desktop iMac on it plus a laptop, my son No2 uses a laptop with it also. When Son No1 is home his PC Laptop with Win7 connects no problem. I have had other friends come with laptops, iPhones, iPod Touch, all have no problems. If permissions are given all can be seen on the network and files transferred between them. The Router is also a 500GB HD and is used to backup my iMac. It all sounds a bit as though I'm bragging about it, but in truth this is how it should be with all networks

I agree Stephen and that is exactly as it was under Windows XP, I am beginning to wish that I had not bothered going up to Win 7. I have to say though that I rather like Win 7 it seems to communicate well with my latop running Vista, it is my older desktop running XP which will not play ball all the time over the network. ?
